Jim Key > The Dec 1st departure date was delayed one day with a camera power pack problem. The following day snow and freezing temperatures set in for nearly a week. I left on the 8th. It was 33 degrees. The plan was to stow cold weather gear at the border and pick it on my return.

Jim Key > I nearly got taken out in the first 10mins of Mexico. Miles are hard fought for. It's all two lane with alot of trucks and buses which slow to a crawl over the topas. The're are ALOT of topas. Toll roads took there toll. I'm guessing I spent nearly $150-$200 on tolls. Often they're "libre" or free roads. They were usually more interesting but often I rounded a corner to a booth with armed guards to pay the toll for the road I've been on. Never seeing any indication that I was entering a toll road.

Jim Key > TUXPAN on the Gulf of Mexico. The temperature was finally warming. With my crappy map it's a wonder I didn't drive right by. I scan for a hotel with secure parking and somewhat near the plaza. All Mexico towns have a plaza. At dusk everyone comes out and good food can be found at the plazas. I double back to the Hotel Riviera. The room was about $35, with internet and the plaza right behind it.

Jim Key > I met Sabine, from Switzerland in San Ignacio, Belize. It's right on the Guatemala border. She joined me Christmas day on a ride out to El Pilar Mayan ruins. It is a rather unexcavated site. We got permission to camp on top the following night.

Jim Key > As we sat on the edge after sunset our conversation was frequently interrupted by the sounds of some critter crashing about. Sounds...lots and lots of sounds all night long. never scarey.... although extreme curiosity would cause my eyes to rapidly dart back and forth.

Jim Key > One of the crazier places I've woke up at. Last night at sunset we listened to and watched the Toucans , birds of all kinds glide over the canopy into the jungle to roost. As darkness set in... the avian symphony hushed into and then overwelmed by the buzzes, hums, clicks , croaks, beeps, peeps, of the jungle insects. Sabine watches the cycle begin again. There is always rustling and crashing in the jungle. I try to zero in on a sound, Sabine ducks to catch a glimpse.

Jim Key > Border money changer , change only $30-$40, ATMS are easy enough to find. knowing the USD conversion was easy. Quezals (7.64= $1USD) to Lempiras(18.95=$1USD), or Colone to Balboa and so on was more challenging. especially when 6 of them are vying for your business

Jim Key > Borders don't dip a toe in human logic. Fill this out, find someone to stamp it, get it photo copied, FIND the photo copier, go back to start, stand in line holding helmet, tank bag full of cameras, backpack, and a Thor fanny pack with passport, visas, permits, photocopies, and a little money from four countries. To find out that now that the photocopy of my passport with the guys signature has been stamped and scribbled over I need to get it copied with my registration . It goes on for about 3 hours.
